Nicaragua is slightly larger than New York state but the largest and most sparsely populated of Central America countries. It is a warm and friendly land of lakes and mountains, rivers and volcanoes, sea and sun. Nicaragua is mountainous in the west, with fertile valleys and two big lakes, Nicaragua and Managua, connected by the Tipitapa River. The Pacific coast has volcanos while the swampy Caribbean coast is aptly called the “Mosquito Coast.” The “Nicas” are friendly and obliging people, with a matriarchal society. It has a a very young population where 60% are under age 17.
